MEXICO EDGEST OUT COLOMBIA TO BE BEST PERFORMING COUNTRY 




The Americas had an interesting but not spectaculear year - while they dominated Miss Universe and Miss International - they did not get that much love at Miss World and only did reasonably well at Miss Earth. 



1. MEXICO

Fatima Bosch's controversial win at Miss Universe helped Mexico to be the best performing country of the year. Their candidate at Miss Earth, Genesis Vera, who was absolutely stunning, also got as far as she could due to what appeared as a lack of preparation as her onstage performance did not meet expectations. At Miss International, they were included in the top 20. 

2. COLOMBIA 

The cherry on the cake of course was saved for last for Colombia, when their representative Catlina Duque, was named the 63rd Miss International. Their delegate at Miss Universe, Vanessa Pulgarin, who was another hot favourite made it to the top 12 but to the shock of many she did not advance further. 


3. BRAZIL 

Brazil performed consistently in the first 3 Big 4 Pageants before falling over the last hurdle of the year. Their highlight of the year was definitely Jessica Podroso's top 8 placement at Miss World and subsequent special title of Miss World Americas.

I consider myself lucky that I had the privilege and honour of working with her for 12 months and there is so much to learn from this remarkable young woman.  You see, many people think that it's only the bright lights, the shows, the glamour, the excitement that we live for but trust me, there's only so much that you can take of that before it becomes repetitive. Why Pageants Became the Love of My Life - PROLOGUE

THE WARMEST: Zozi blew me away because she was the warmest and  most naturally charasmatic reigning Miss Universe I met The Beauty of How a Moment Can Last a Lifetime  I remember the first time I "saw" a pageant. The year was 1987. The channel was TV1 if memory serves me and I only got a brief glimpse of something that caught my attention immediately and left such a huge impression that it still remains with me to this day. It was the first ever (I found out later) live broadcast of Miss South Africa and I could only take in something that spoke to me for probably less than a couple of minutes before the sitter changed the channel. But it STUCK and ended become perhaps the greatest love of my life.  A MOMENT IN TIME: The year was 1987,  I don't remember much  but I  remember a few glimpses of the middle of the show and  I can still see it so clearly. Why Pageants Became the Love of My Life - A Celebration of Strength

 PREVIOUSLY:  Prologue IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME: It is a pity that hindsight is sometimes the  best teacher but pageants represented what I saw in my mother when I was   young and the good things I wanted for her!  Hindsight is such a wonderful thing - beautiful, sweet, inspirational but also usually a bit painful without the extreme sting of the deep, overwhelming hurt that you might have felt at the time. I find people who say that you should just look ahead a bit misguided because, you see, without hindsight there can be no reflection. And reflection is something that guides you towards a deeper understanding of yourself, others, your environment, what's trivial and what's not and just life in general, I would argue.  Now, as I am writing, I am also discovering that yes I usually proclaim that this year it will be 35 years of pageants being integral to my existence.
